Salt Lake City, UT - One hundred and eight units of blood were donated at the Salt Lake Donor Center on September 4 at a blood drive that was unique for several reasons.
Radio station KKAT, Country Legends 107.5 FM, was the media sponsor. The station ran promotional spots the week before the drive, interviewed Julia Wulf, Lewis and Clark CEO the day of the drive, and even sent a disc jockey “Country Joe” to attended the drive. Country Joe didn’t donate blood himself but arranged for his technician to donate, and then, for two hours, made remote broadcast announcements encouraging his listeners to come in and donate. Several of Country Joe’s fans attended to take advantage of meeting the popular DJ.
Another unique feature this year was the attempt by Utah donor recruiters to emulate the Pint for a Pint promotion that has been successful in Montana and Idaho. All presenting donors received a pint of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream. Donors were also treated to salad and bread sticks courtesy of the Olive Garden Restaurant and bottles of juice donated by Honest Beverages.
Presenting donors were all eligible to enter a drawing to win Utah State Fair tickets, Lagoon tickets and a Phantom 150cc scooter.
Lynn Chatterton, donor recruitment representative who helped organize the drive, said, “The radio station and all the prizes created a festive atmosphere that the donors appreciated.” He said that the company which donated the ice cream has already indicated a willingness to make the donation again next year and believes that Country Joe will be back to urge his listeners to donate at future drives.
