National Day of Giving is an Opportunity to Support Your American Red Cross

This holiday season push will put the final touch on the $100 million goal for the Red Cross Campaign for Disaster Relief. To focus attention on the need and what you can do to help, the Red Cross has designated December 13, 2008, as the “National Day of Giving.”

In 2008, the financial resources of the American Red Cross were significantly depleted by our widespread response to those affected by the devastating hurricane season, the rampant wildfires, and thousands of local disasters that never make national news.

To assure that we have resources on hand to respond to disasters yet to come, the Red Cross has established a goal to raise $100 million before the end of calendar year 2008.  More than $60 million has been raised through generous contributions but we still need public support to reach the larger goal.

There are several ways you can help.

  • On December 13, Red Cross chapters across the country will be asking Americans across the country for your financial assistance as part of the 'National Day of Giving' campaign.
  • Some blood drives and donor centers will have canisters available so blood donors can also make a financial contribution in the form of coins, cash or checks.
  • When you call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to make your blood donation appointment, tell the Red Cross staff that you also want to donate money to the disaster relief fund.  We’ll transfer you – or you can call directly – to 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767).  Spanish-speakers may call 1-800-257-7575.
  • You may contribute $5.00 to the disaster relief fund via cell phone by texting the word “GIVE” (4483) to “2HELP” (24357).  All applicable text rates apply.
  • You may make an on-line donation by visiting the American Red Cross “Campaign for Disaster Relief” web site or by going to www.redcross.org

Your American Red Cross looks to you for help now, so we can help others in need in the future.  Please help.

Blood donors must be at least 16 years old (with a signed Red Cross parental consent form), be in general good health, and weigh at least 110 pounds. Learn more about donor eligibility and the blood donation process.
