Since August 6, the American Red Cross has been onsite supporting the Price/Huntington communities as they deal with the collapse of the Crandall Canyon Mine in central Utah that trapped six miners.
Working with other community agencies, including the Salvation Army and the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief Team, the Red Cross has provided mental heath counseling, meals, and crucial support for family members and rescue workers.
On Thursday evening, August 16, the community suffered a tragic loss with another collapse of the mine resulted in the deaths of three rescue miners, and injury to several others. Injured miners were taken to hospitals in Price, Provo, and Salt Lake City.
The Red Cross has been in continuing contact with all hospitals treating the injured miners, beginning immediately after the accident. The American Red Cross supplies blood to three of four hospitals where injured miners are/were being treated and all four hospitals report having adequate blood supplies to meet the current need.
Thanks to volunteer blood donors, any blood used by the miners was already in the hospitals’ blood banks, before the crisis occurred. The Red Cross knows how important it is to be prepared at all times to respond to emergencies like this. Blood has to be on the shelf and ready for use before a disaster occurs.
People who want to help assure that hospital blood banks are always stocked and ready for people in need can do so by donating blood in the next few days and weeks, and regularly throughout the year. The American Red Cross also accepts financial donations that allow them to continue to provide important disaster response services.
